A personalized anime mug is more than a coffee container. It's a statement. It's your morning ritual altar. It's the first story post of the day.
Here's how to make one — and how we make them at Big Bang Workshops if you'd rather skip the process and just receive the finished piece.
What You Need
- Sublimation printer (Epson EcoTank ET-2800 or Sawgrass SG500)
- Sublimation ink
- Sublimation paper (A-SUB is the maker community favorite)
- Mug heat press or convection oven + mug wrap
- White polyester-coated mugs (11oz or 15oz)
- Heat-resistant tape + Teflon sheet
Step-by-Step Process
Step 1: Create or get the art
Use Canva, Photoshop, or Procreate. Design must be approximately 8.5" x 3.75" for 11oz mugs. If using fan art, make sure you have permission or use original art.
Geek tip: Dark background designs on white mugs look INCREDIBLE with sublimation. The colors just explode.
Step 2: Print in mirror mode
CRITICAL. Flip your design horizontally before printing. If you don't, the text appears backwards on the mug. Yes, it's the #1 mistake beginners make.
Step 3: Prep the mug
Clean it with isopropyl alcohol. No oils, no dust. The professional touch.
Step 4: Wrap and secure
Place the paper (ink side facing the mug) and wrap it tightly. Secure with heat-resistant tape. No bubbles, no creases — every wrinkle shows in the final result.
Step 5: Press
With mug press: 380–400°F for 3–5 minutes.
With oven + mug wrap: 400°F for 7–8 minutes.
Remove carefully (it's VERY hot), peel the paper immediately, and let it cool.
Step 6: Result 🔥
If you followed the steps, you're holding a professional-quality anime art mug in your hands. Completely washable. Completely viral.
Advanced Tips
- The mug seam should face away from your design
- Put parchment paper under the mug to catch any ink bleed
- Don't exceed pressing time — over-pressing reduces color saturation
- Sublimation mugs are dishwasher safe (top rack)

FAQ
Can I use anime fan art?
For personal use, yes. For selling, you need rights or original/royalty-free art. Anime copyright is serious business.
What mug size is best for selling?
11oz is the standard. 15oz is popular for people who want more coffee (everyone). Offer both.
Does it work with dark-colored designs?
Yes — and it looks incredible. Sublimation on a white mug makes colors incredibly vibrant. For specialty colored mugs you'd need specific coated blanks.
